PDS Tech Inc R & D Technician in Appleton, Wisconsin

This position is responsible for assembly, testing and debugging of prototype machines and special processes with strong emphasis on electrical controls and mechanical systems. Typical duties include assembly, testing, conceptualization, and documentation of research and development projects. Position also provides assistance in these areas to other departments and customers. Occasional travel required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

I) Assembly: Primarily assembles machinery and controls. This also includes some parts fabrication. May plan and layout components first or follow someone else's layout. Will do assembly of mechanical and electrical subsystems following engineering drawings and sketches, or own design. Keeps careful notes and records for possible inclusion in subsequent engineering documentation. Responsible to build assemblies to schedule.

  1. Research and Development: Fabricate prototypes to quickly prove out concepts utilizing fabrication tools and spare/test parts where possible. Assist and lead process development for new machines and technologies. Provide insights and collect data to back up observations. Collaborate with engineers and designers to optimize solutions efficiently.

  2. Testing: Verifies functionality of machine control systems and new control system components. Utilizes analytical skills to determine causes of failures and malfunctions. This includes: isolation of problems to particular components; more specific isolation and identification; and recommendation, implementation and verification of solutions or corrective actions.

  1. Design: Works closely with project manager, engineers and designers as a team. Seeks design ideas from production personnel as well as cost-effective methods of fabrication and assembly. Suggests design ideas and problem-solving solutions. Seeks, encourages, listens to, considers, and recognizes creative ideas and viewpoints of others. Seeks, recommends, and helps evaluate new and alternative components and manufacturers. Occasionally attends seminars and design shows. Participates at project meetings.

  2. Documentation: Maintains a laboratory notebook, carefully recording details of all tests performed, including the following: set-up, test methods, instrumentation used, data taken, results, observations and conclusions. Keeps detailed notes and sketches on fabrication and assembly designs and tests, set-up, calibration, adjustment and troubleshooting procedures, which may be needed for engineering documentation and technical publications. Drafts or assists in drafting portions of technical publications, especially in respect to procedures and algorithms. May assist in checking and directing creation of engineering drawings for final production release. Assists in writing patent disclosures when necessary.

  3. Assistance: Provides technical advice and assistance to other departments. Occasionally travels to field locations to assist in field tests and trials or installation/servicing of machinery. May run demos of new machines or designs for customers at trade shows. Participates in assembly of first production build of new machines and designs. May help run sample product for sales department or customers on prototype machines.

Completion of a vocational degree or equivalent experience plus four or more years experience in machine assembly, testing and debugging. Must be competent in the following disciplines: electrical assembly; mechanical assembly; programming; film processing. Initiative in solving technical problems with strong analytical skills is essential to this position. Ability to understand and utilize electrical and pneumatic schematics, fabrication and assembly drawings is required in daily work. Ability to sketch drawings for communicating to engineering is crucial. Position requires use of basic hand tools including wrenches, calipers, measuring devices and wiring tools as well as machine shop tools (i.e. mill, lathe). Technical writing skills are necessary for technical reporting in laboratory notebook, for drafting technical set up, adjustment calibration and troubleshooting procedures, and for reviewing and editing new operator and maintenance manuals. Position requires good technical and interpersonal communication skills.
